Waringo was an apple native to China. It is an old breed which was introduced into Japan in the eighth century.
In the Meiji era (1868-1912), it disappeared from stores after western apples started to be sold. It is a very rare breed of apple which is grown in Hikone City to dedicate to festivals in the temples and shrines.
